The Edrington Family

Team Leader: Steve Georgie

The Edrington family adopted a 3-month-old child with special needs. At the age of 6 he was diagnosed with Dueschene's muscular dystrophy. Now at the age of 21, the family continues to care for him at home instead of an external facility. The young man requires around-the-clock care, help with his daily routines, numerous doctor's appointments. His mother continues to battle her own health issues and although both mother and son recieve small disability checks and father works fulltime, their combined income barely covers the bare essentials. Their wheelchair-accommodated van is in serious need of repair or replacement. Their home is not suitable for their son's wheelchair. They cannot afford to hire contractors and do not qualify for state repairs before the husband makes just enough to disqualify them. The wooden ramp at the entrance of the house is decaying. There is no rear ramp so the son cannot enjoy the back yead. A roll-shower is desperately needed to accommodate the son's wheelchair. The carpeting is torn, creating a safety wheelchair hazard. Can we extend the help beyond the Edrington's neighbors and get involved?

Updates: 3/24/08 Thanks to Manasota Flooring, 1,600 sq. feet of tile has been donated. This will allow Ben to get around his home in his wheelchair. Thanks to the endless effort of the Edrington family committee and special thanks to Judi and Claude McGavic for their support towards this project.

6/12/08 Thanks to Manasota Commercial Construction, life for Ben will be made so much easier on him and his family. His new bathroom will be a locker style bathroom with special massage jets in the wall for therapy. He'll be cruising in his home on a new floor. His faithful companion, Quincy will love the cool tile. With some changes, Ben will be able enjoy his back lanai. We are hoping to find a temporary home for the Edrington's while Manasota Commercial Construction and their team of contractors get busy.

The economic conditions have continued to play a major role in slowing down this project. The commitments from three different architects has not materialized so Steve Georgie is desperately trying locate new sources. Once that is done, Manasota Commercial Construction is ready to go.
